The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty is an interfaith, nonpartisan, public-interest law firm dedicated to protecting the free expression of all religious traditions. Last summer, Mr. Severino traveled to Sri Lanka where he met with religious and government officials, and interviewed several victims of violent religious persecution.

Congressional interest in religious tensions in Sri Lanka has increased as a result of widespread attacks on churches and religiously-affiliated NGOs and the recent actions of the Sri Lanka Parliament, including introduction of legislation that would criminalize religious conversion attempts. Inter-religious tensions survived the tsunami as the relief efforts of religiously-affiliated NGOs are being called into question in overwhelmingly Theravada Buddhist Sri Lanka.

The briefing will address these issues as well as recent history of the tensions and possible effects on present relief efforts.

Interns welcome.
